In our last Blog we looked at some of the changes made by the HSE to the First Aid Regulations. In this Blog we have included a table showing how First With Iain will exceed the requirement set out by the HSE.

This can be supplied as a full stand alone document for you to include in your First Aid Training Need Risk Assessment.

Trainers/Assessors

    

Do the Trainers/assessors have a current FAW Certificate

  

All First With Iain Trainers and Assessors hold a current FAW. All trainers additionally hold IHCD FPOS I Qualifications in addition to FAW.

Do the trainers/ assessors have an appropriate training/assessing qualification

  

All First With Iain Instructors hold CTLLS and all assessors hold the minimum of PTTLS with unit “Principles and Practices of Assessment”

Instructor Continuous Professional Development

  

All First With Iain Instructors undertake a minimum of 12 hours CPD per year and also peer to peer review by observation of their training yearly.

All CPD is fully documented and can be shown upon request.

Quality Assurance

    

Is there a documented quality assurance plan designating an individual to take responsibility for quality assurance, including assessment of the performance of trainers/assessors at least annually?

  

Quality assurance for First With Iain is undertaken by Aid Training and Operations Ltd. The Quality Assurance process will exactly mirror that of the proven and tested HSE model. Aid Training holding ISO9001 in First Aid Training delivery further supports this.

Does the designated person have a current FAW certificate or qualify for an exemption?

    

Does the designated person have an assessing/verifying qualification?

    

Is there a documented Course evaluation procedure?

  

First With Iain gives every trainee a course feedback form for them to complete anonymously. This is part of First With Iain’s ongoing course evaluation process.

Is there a documented complaints procedure?

  

A copy is available upon request

Is there a mechanism for retaining records of assessment?

  

Each course has a consolidated sheet to record the continuous assessment of each trainee. This is kept for three years after completion of the course along with candidate feedback and course evaluation paperwork.

Is the sufficient well, maintained equipment to permit the students to complete their training and assessment?

  

First With Iain work to a maximum of one CPR Mannequin to two students. All students are issued a training face shield for CPR training. All training aids are maintained and cleaned in accordance with manufactures direction.

Teaching Currently Accepted First Aid Practice

    

Is FAW/EFAW taught in accordance with current guidelines on adult basic life support published by the Resuscitation Council (UK), and for other aspects of first aid, in accordance with the current guidelines published by the Voluntary Aid Societies or other published guidelines that are used by a responsible body of medical opinion?

  

All First Aid training by First With Iain is in accordance with the Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines (Oct 2010 and St John Ambulance First Aid Handbook Revised edition 9

Training Syllabus

    

Does the course content adequately meet the needs of your workplace as indicated by your first aid needs assessment?

  

If your First Aid assessment indicates you need either FAW or EFAW trained first aiders First With Iain’s FAW and EFAW course fully comply with those requirements

For FAW, does the syllabus include the topics listed in Appendix 1 to Selecting a first Aid Training provider, a guide for employers, HSE Information Sheet and does the course include at least 18hours training and assessment contact hours over the three days?

  

The First With Iain FAW course includes all topics listed in appendix 1 and contains 18 hours contact time over the three days (unless the training is provided in blocks of 2 hours or more over maximum of 10 weeks)

For FAW Requalification, does the syllabus include the topics listed in Appendix 1 to Selecting a first Aid Training provider, a guide for employers, HSE Information Sheet and does the course include at least 12 hours training and assessment contact hours over the two days?

  

The First With Iain FAW Requalification course includes all topics listed in appendix 1 and contains 12 hours contact time over the two days (unless the training is provided in blocks of 2 hours or more over maximum of 6 weeks)

For EFAW, does the syllabus include the topics listed in Appendix 2 to Selecting a first Aid Training provider, a guide for employers, HSE Information Sheet and does the course include at least 6 hours training and assessment contact hours over the one day?

  

The First With Iain EFAW course includes all topics listed in appendix 2 and contains 6 hours contact time over the one day (unless the training is provided in blocks of 2 hours or more over maximum of 3 weeks)

Is all training to accepted standards of training?

  

First With Iain caps all first aid training courses at a maximum of 12 per class. If there are more trainees than 12 then a separate trainer will run a separate training course.

First With Iain always requests information on any trainees who may have learning or communication difficulties, or disability on the registration form. Each case is then dealt with and training modified on a case by case basis. However during summative assessment stages the candidate must demonstrate their first aid competency without any assistance.

Certificates

    

Do the certificates issued to students assessed as competent contain the name of the Training Organization, the Title of the qualification (eg EFAW, FAW), reference to the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, the date of issue and confirmation the certificate is valid for three years? (If training is neither FAW nor EFAW the certificate should also list the learning outcomes of the syllabus on which candidates have been assessed)

  

All First With Iain Certificates contain all information listed by HSE (First-Aid) Regulations 1981
